Using Mono referenced classes

Hi There, This is driving me insane. All I want to do is use some of the inbuilt mono classes. I include them as a reference then they work, but unity cannot find them so fails the build! I know I have to add them as an asset but I just simply cannot find the bloody things, neither Unity or MonoDevelop give me any clue as to where the particular library I am using actually is! Now if I search I find lord knows how many libraries of the same name spread through my machine. I have to painstakingly work my way through each, dropping it into assets and testing. This is almost as bad as 80's programming, surely I am doing something wrong here? Please help me. The capabilities here look so great but it is fighting back so hard that I'm going get bored and go back to trying DirectX again soon, at least I could get that to compile :-(
